Meet Andrea Grantham: New CNS Executive Director.

Andrea Grantham has played an executive leadership role in the health and physical activity and sector in many capacities for close to 25 years, among them working to influence greater government focus on the issue of chronic disease prevention through healthy living and physical activity.  She worked closely with all levels of government, NGOs, corporate partners, and other key stakeholders.  She was CEO of Physical and Health Education Canada (PHE Canada) and provided leadership and secretariat services to the Coalition for Active living and the Sport Matters Group.  She was a regular presenter to Standing Committees, Ministers of Health/Secretary of State (Sport), MPs, Senators and other government officials speaking to the issue of preventative strategies as important areas of focus for government investment.

To support the Government’s goal of increasing access by all children and youth in active, after school programs, Andrea was asked by the Public Health Agency of Canada to lead a multi-year initiative, including the selection and funding to relevant NGOs in an effort to help the government meet its 2015 Canadian Physical Activity Targets. She also worked in partnership with stakeholders to develop Active Canada 20/20, a physical activity strategy and change agenda for Canada. In 2010 and 2011, the Canadian Association for the Advancement of Women and Sport and Physical Activity (CAAWS) named Andrea to Canada’s Most Influential Women List. This award highlights the leadership, strength and accomplishments of Canadian women who made a significant impact in sport and physical activity. She also received the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medallion in 2012 for her leadership within the sport and physical activity community.

Welcome Andrea!

Student News

CNS-SCN @ Mount Saint Vincent University – Presentation by Dr. Jones

CNS-SCN@MSVU recently hosted an educational event for over 60 attendees where Dr. Peter Jones, Director of the Richardson Centre for Functional Food and Nutraceuticals, presented on the findings of some of his latest research to a diverse crowd of MSVU faculty and students, community members, and representatives from Dalhousie University.  The talk, entitled “Inter-Individual Variability of the Cardio-Metabolic Risk Factors Response to Dietary Bioactive Compounds: Probing the Reason Why,” explored the reasons for differences in changes in blood cholesterol levels between non- or adverse-responders and positive-responders to three common functional food additives, namely plant sterols, omega 3 fatty acids, and fibre.  While the data is still in the preliminary stages, the evidence is compelling enough to suggest that variations in specific gene expressions may be used to determine who will be classified as a non- or adverse-responder to these functional foods.  As adverse-responders, specifically, saw a rise in blood cholesterol, this research has the potential to affect how functional foods are recommended in the future.  Dr. Jones presentation was a great first event for the 2014/2015 school year at MSVU, and helped promote the ongoing advances in nutrition research as well as the efficacy of CNS.

CNS-SCN Student Executive would also like to announce our newest Student Representative Audrée-Anne Dumas.

Welcome Audrée-Anne!
