“How can I help my client if they don’t have enough money for food?” About 1 in 5 Canadians experience household food insecurity. Household food insecurity puts clients at risk of poorer physical and mental health outcomes. Many healthcare providers feel unsure if and how they can support their clients. 

Learn how Alberta Health Services (AHS) is supporting health professionals to navigate this challenge in health care and community settings. Hear from a dietitian on how to integrate key principles about household food insecurity into  practice.

About the Speakers:

Kally Cheung is a Public Health Nutrition Provincial Lead with the Nutrition Services Provincial Strategy Team at Alberta Health Services. One of her focus area is to build understanding of household food insecurity within the Alberta context, and partnering with health teams, care providers, community groups on actions to support those experiencing household food insecurity. She is a Registered Dietitian, a Certified Diabetes Educator and has a Master of Public Health from University of Alberta. Prior to this role, she practiced in clinical areas such as pediatric nutrition, diabetes and eating disorders in rural and urban Alberta.  She also supported research in Indigenous communities on nutrition and food environments. 


Lisa Mowers is the Provincial Practice Lead for Mental Health and Nutritional Counseling with AHS Nutrition Services. She received her degree in Food and Nutrition from Ryerson University in Toronto and specialized her career as a Registered Dietitian in the areas of eating disorders and general psychiatry. In her current role, Lisa supports dietitians across the province of Alberta with building their confidence and professional skills in the areas of mental health and behaviour change.  As a HealthChange Methodology trainer, Lisa is passionate about helping other healthcare professionals deliver their services, using an evidence based, person – centered approach.
