CNS-SCN Member of the Month – October 2016
Meet Amanda Longo
Amanda Longo is a Ph.D. student in the Faculty of Applied Health Sciences at Brock University. Amanda’s thesis research is investigating how different sources of oil - flaxseed and fish oil – and levels of these oils support bone health, and recently coauthored a review related to this topic in Advances in Nutrition. Amanda’s research has also made important contributions to understanding methodological questions pertaining to in vivo imaging of bone structure using computed tomography through two peer-reviewed publications.
Throughout her Ph.D. program, mentored by Dr. Wendy Ward, Amanda has shown her enthusiasm for nutrition research through volunteer activities with CNS. Amanda initiated the Student Chapter of CNS at Brock, serving as the lead for two years, organizing several journal club events and growing interest in nutrition research with other students. Amanda also volunteered at past CNS Thematic meetings and has contributed two “graduate student perspectives” based on meeting experiences in the CNS Newsletter.
Amanda welcomes opportunities to share her research and other nutrition information with the public. Amanda’s desire to make science accessible encouraged her submission to the NSERC Science Action! program. Amanda has also made significant contributions to overall graduate student life in her role as VP Student Affairs within the Graduate Students Association, promoting interdisciplinary research through hosting a variety of events and active participation in planning community and student-based conferences at Brock.
