Harold Aukema, PhD

Harold Aukema is a Full Professor in the Department of Food and Human Nutritional Sciences at the University of Manitoba, where he has served as Acting Head, Associate Head and Graduate Program chair over the years. He is also a Principal Investigator at the St Boniface Hospital Albrechtsen Research Centre in Winnipeg, where he is a member the leadership team for the Canadian Centre for Agri-Food Research in Health and Medicine and is an inaugural member of the Precision Cardiovascular Medicine Group. 

He has been engaged with CNS-SCN and CSNS in various capacities, including as chair, vice-chair and member of the Membership Committee, co-chair and organizing committees for Winnipeg CNS conferences, CNS conference symposia organizer and chair, and CNS awards adjudicator. He currently is a CNS Faculty mentor for the University Student Representative Initiative, and an Associate Editor of the society journal, APNM. 

In collaboration with scientists around the globe, and with funding from NSERC and CIHR, his lab has advanced knowledge on the role of oxylipins in various tissues and disease states, including the effects of diet and sex differences. His research has informed dietary recommendations, including for the general population as well as for kidney health and polycystic kidney disease. He has mentored >75 students in his laboratory, resulting in >300 presentations and >140 publications in leading nutrition and lipid journals, including 3 reviews that are used in graduate teaching nationally and internationally.

Harold is a founding board member of CanU Canada, a Winnipeg based organization that has brought >2000 children with potential to the university campus for hands-on learning activities in nutrition. This has enabled >75 University of Manitoba nutrition students to acquire practical experience delivering nutrition education.

He has been recognized for his contributions to nutrition with University of Manitoba teaching, service and research awards, and has received the CSNS Centrum Foundation New Scientist Award and the CNS Earle Willard McHenry Award for Distinguished Service in Nutrition. He is grateful to the CNS community, and for the many generous colleagues, outstanding students and amazing collaborators, without whom his rewarding career would not have been possible.
