Guylaine Ferland, PhD

Guylaine Ferland is a professor of nutrition at the Université de Montréal and scientist at the Montreal Heart Institute Research Centre. She is an expert in vitamin K metabolism and her team has made significant contributions to the role of this nutrient in brain function and cognition. In addition to her work in vitamin K, Dr. Ferland conducts research on the general role of nutrition in cognitive health during aging. In recent years she has been the PI of the CIHR-funded NutCog Study, a Quebec cohort study aimed at better understanding the modulatory role of nutrition and metabolic states in cognitive aging. She is also the lead of the Nutrition, Exercise and Lifestyle team of the Canadian Consortium on Neurodegeneration in Aging (CCNA), a nation-wide research initiative on Alzheimer's disease and other neurodegenerative diseases in aging. Dr. Ferland’s research activities include both animal models and human studies and have received regular financial support from CIHR, FRQ-S, and their various programs. Dr. Ferland is the author/co-author of >140 peer-reviewed publications and totals >110 guest presentations. Over the years she has contributed to the training of >45 graduate and >60 undergraduate students, respectively, as well as >10 highly qualified personnel. Dr Ferland has served as nutrition expert on various panels, notably the DRI Micronutrient Panel [Food and Nutrition Board, Institute of Medicine, National Academy of Sciences, USA] and the working group that lead to the Policy Recommendations on the Addition of Vitamins and Minerals to Foods [Bureau of Nutritional Sciences, Food Directorate, Health Protection Branch, Health Canada]. A member of Canadian Nutrition Society (CNS) since its creation in 2010, Guylaine has served in various capacities, including the Awards Committee (Chair 2010-2012; Member 2013-2019), the Advisory Board (since 2012), the Nomination Committee (2015-2016), the Board of Directors (2016-2022), and as President (2019-2021). Before CNS was established, Guylaine was a member of one of its founding organizations, the Canadian Society for Nutritional Sciences (CSNS), which she joined as a PhD student, and where she served as secretary from 2003 to 2008. Guylaine is currently a member of the Membership Committee of the American Society for Nutrition (since 2020). She is a frequent reviewer for nutrition journals, and regularly serves as a member of CIHR review panels where she was recognized as an “Outstanding Reviewer” in 2023-2024.
