Dr. Flavio Vieira is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Alberta and a recipient of prestigious Postdoctoral Fellowships from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), Alberta Innovates, and the Women and Children's Health Research Institute. Dr. Vieira completed his Bachelor's, Master's, and Ph.D. in Human Nutrition in Brazil, his home country. Dr. Vieira also holds Postgraduate Diplomas in Epidemiology and in Clinical Nutrition, having completed an intensive 2-year residency program, and credentials as a Registered Dietitian Specialized in Nutrition Therapy from Brazil.
Dr. Vieira began his journey in Canada in 2021 as an international visiting Ph.D. student at the University of Alberta in the Department of Agricultural, Food & Nutritional Sciences. After this time, Dr. Vieira received a Postdoctoral fellowship offer from Dr. Carla Prado, which started in 2022. In 2023, Dr. Vieira transitioned to a second Postdoctoral position cross-appointed in the Department of Pediatrics, now co-supervised by Drs. Carla Prado and Andrea Haqq.
Dr. Vieira's primary research focus is on managing obesity and obesity-related comorbidities, working from prevention to improved care across the lifespan, from pediatrics to older adults, involving all aspects of obesity management: nutrition, exercise, behavioural changes, pharmacology, and metabolic and bariatric surgery. Dr. Vieira is particularly interested in assessing body composition, energy metabolism, and nutrition-related conditions, such as sarcopenic obesity and malnutrition. He understands the complexity of obesity as a chronic disease and strives to move towards a patient-centred, individualized, holistic, and multidisciplinary approach while combating weight bias and stigma
