Dr Duerksen grew up in Winnipeg and attended medical school and completed his internal medicine residency at the University of Manitoba. He went on to complete his training in gastroenterology at the University of Alberta followed by a 1 year nutrition fellowship at the Deaconess Hospital in Boston with Dr Bruce Bistrian and Dr George Blackburn. After his training he returned to Winnipeg where he has been on staff at the St Boniface General hospital. 

Currently Dr Duerksen is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Manitoba and is the Section Head of the Division of Gastroenterology. He is also the Medical Director of the Manitoba Home Nutrition Program and Medical Advisor for the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority Department of Nutrition. He also directs the nutrition support program at the St Boniface Hospital. 

He was one of the founding members of the Canadian Society of Clinical Nutrition in 2002 and served as President in 2006 and 2007. He is one of the founding members of the Canadian Malnutrition Task Force. 

In addition to his interest in malnutrition, he has a clinical and research interest in celiac disease. He is the current chair of the Scientific and Medical Advisory Board of Celiac Canada. 

His research interests include malnutrition in hospitalized patients, complications of TPN and enteral nutrition, and celiac disease. He has been active in teaching nutrition assessment (subjective global assessment) to physicians, dietitians, dietetic interns, and medical students.
