The Office of Nutrition Policy and Promotion (ONPP) serves as the focal point and authoritative source for public health nutrition and healthy eating policy and promotion in Canada. This session will provide an update on some of the initiatives underway in the Office.

A key responsibility of ONPP is to develop and promote dietary guidance to support the nutritional health and well-being of Canadians. This work includes monitoring and reviewing the evidence underpinning guidance, developing dietary guidance, and supporting the implementation of guidance by others into various applications.

This session will describe aspects of dietary guidance development and the types of evidence used to inform healthy eating recommendations. This will include a discussion on methodology and considerations when developing healthy dietary patterns. An update on the evidence review process being used by Health Canada to gather, assess, and analyze data relevant to dietary guidance will also be provided.

Krista Esslinger is a nutrition advisor working in dietary guidance at the Office of Nutrition Policy and Promotion. She joined the Office in 2001 and was part of the team that produced Eating Well with Canada's Food Guide in 2007. In particular, she worked on the technical team that developed the recommended eating pattern through a modelling approach, as well as issues primarily relating to the application of nutrient reference values into dietary guidance policy. Ms Esslinger was the coordinator of Health Canada's Expert Advisory Committee on Dietary Reference Intakes (DRIs) and has more recently been involved in a joint US-Canada working group examining issues relevant to the next phase of the DRIs.
