In support of Health Canada's mission to help Canadians maintain and improve their health, the Food Directorate is the federal health authority responsible for establishing policies, setting standards and providing advice and information on the safety and nutritional value of food. The Bureau of Nutritional Sciences (BNS) is a specialized scientific bureau of the Food Directorate responsible for nutrition-related policies, standards, advice and information and its responsibilities flow from the nutrition-related provisions of the Food and Drugs Act and Regulations. BNS develops regulations and guidelines to address the nutritional quality and safety of foods available for sale on the Canadian market; is responsible for the application of the Food and Drugs Act and Regulations in evaluating the nutritional adequacy and safety of regulatory submissions; and undertakes laboratory research, monitoring and surveillance to support evidence-based decision making. BNS works closely with other Federal and Provincial government partners, non-government health and educational organizations, the food industry and consumers on a variety of nutrition issues. Current initiatives include amendments to nutrition labelling regulations, revision to fortification policies, and management of supplemented foods. Dr. William Yan, Director of Nutritional Sciences, will be providing an update on the key priorities for BNS.
