Mini Virtual Conference Overview

Social media is an important platform to share thoughts, ideas, and information and make complex nutrition research accessible and understandable to the public. However, in a sea of misinformation (and disinformation), it challenging for scientists and health professionals to inform and educate the public. It is equally challenging for the public to sift through the crowded social media landscape to make informed dietary decisions. Adding to these challenges, conflicting nutrition information causes consumer confusion and can impact public trust in credible sources of nutrition information.

This mini-conference will discuss the scope of conflicting nutrition information, misinformation, and disinformation from various perspectives and propose strategies to reduce public confusion and increase the visibility in credible nutrition sources. A panel discussion at the end will discuss strategies and potential solutions to combat mis/disinformation and how to use professional platforms to appropriately advocate and educate the public.

Learning Objectives:

By the end of this mini-conference, participants will be able to:

  1. Recognize the scope of conflicting information, misinformation, and disinformation in nutrition and its potential impacts on public health.
  2. Outline strategies and potential solutions to address nutrition mis/disinformation.
  3. Review knowledge translation plans to minimize public confusion.
