The Volunteer's Role

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced Water, Sanitation And Hygiene (WASH) professional to contribute to a regional nutrition project led by CARE Canada! The Southern Africa Nutrition Initiative (SANI) is working to improve the nutrition of women of reproductive age and children under five years old in Malawi, Mozambique, and Zambia.
As a Water, Sanitation And Hygiene (WASH) Advisor, you bring strong technical expertise to the SANI team in Zambia, working with colleagues to ensure that SANI builds local capacity to improve nutrition water and sanitation practices in target communities. This will involve working with colleagues to conduct situational analysis, sharing international and evidence-based best practices, developing and testing KAP tools to identify gaps in current sanitation and hygiene practices, and supporting the team to finalize the SANI WASH strategy in Zambia.
You bring to this role a solid understanding of a Community Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) approach to implementation and the development of tools and resources, strong analytical skills, and an ability to work with a range of stakeholders using strong relationship building and facilitation skills.

As a volunteer, you will:
- Support staff to conduct situational analysis to identify and document baseline community access to clean water
- Facilitate capacity building for project staff and key stakeholders in WASH and CLTS
- Lead in development of SANI Zambia WASH and CLTS strategy
- Work with staff to develop tools and field test to capture individuals' knowledge, attitude and practice of sanitation and hygiene practices
- Assess and advise on the technical gaps on current WASH and CLTS practices in Zambia's SANI target districts.
- Document and share best WASH and CLTS practices with team and partners

Essential Academic Qualifications:
- Degree in Environmental Health /Public Health or closely related fields.


Essential Professional Background:
- Minimum 2 years' experience in WASH programming, particularly in sanitation and hygiene
- Understanding behaviour change and health promotion methods

Terms and Conditions

Cuso International terms and conditions allow you to lead a modest and healthy lifestyle while being effective in your placement. This support package will cover basic living expenses for one volunteer and is not intended to cover home-based expenses (ex. loans, support payments, etc.) or luxury items such as imported items in placement or international personal travel.

Support Package
- Modest monthly living allowance (varies depending country)
- Accommodation while in placement
- Return airfare and visa/work permit costs
- Cost of required vaccinations, antimalarial medication and health insurance
- Pre-departure training and in-country orientation
- Travel and accommodation for reintegration debriefing weekend
- Modest support for accompanying partners and dependents going on placement with you for 12 months or longer (Return flight, emergency medical insurance, vaccinations)
- Access to Employee Assistance Program while in placement and upon return
- Cuso International assessment day (Candidates must cover the first $200 of the most cost-effective travel expenses and all accommodation costs).
- Travel and accommodation for the five-day pre-departure training course and for in-country orientation
- Bonus: Additional return flight home or cash in lieu after 12 months of service for volunteers who extend for another 6 months

Fundraising
We ask each volunteer, regardless of placement length, to raise $2,000. All volunteers receive support from Cuso International to help achieve the goal through fundraising. If the volunteer chooses not to fundraise or is unable to achieve the fundraising goal, he/she can make a one-time donation or become a monthly donor to support our work.
