Job Description

The role of Associate Manager, Regulatory Affairs, is responsible for providing solutions-oriented regulatory leadership and guidance supporting the PepsiCo Beverages Canada brand and innovation agendas. The PBC portfolio includes the Beverage Category (Carbonated Soft Drinks, Waters, Iced Teas/Coffees, Energy Drinks), Nutrition-Beverage Category (incl Sports Drinks, Juices, Smoothies, Kombucha), and Foodservice (Fountain, Frozen Carbonated Beverages). Iconic brands include Pepsi, 7UP, Mountain Dew, Tropicana, Gatorade, Starbucks, Lipton/Pure Leaf, Aquafina, Naked, KeVita and others. This role is primarily responsible for supporting the Beverage Category brands and Foodservice. The role will also lead some initiatives that impact the total PBC portfolio such as representing PepsiCo on external affairs files with government and industry associations and leading work to improve processes and develop internal guidelines.

Primary responsibilities include guiding R&D Product Development and Marketing on regulatory requirements/solutions and ensuring regulatory compliance for ingredients/formulas/nutrition facts/claims/labels for product innovation/productivity/brand stewardship projects and advertising/marketing and communications materials; leading complex regulatory files including government submissions for new ingredients/product/claim approvals (including Health Canada-issued Temporary Marketing Authorizations) and certifications (e.g., kosher, organic, non-GMO); supporting the external affairs/government relations agenda by representing PepsiCo with Government (Health Canada/Canadian Food Inspection Agency) and Industry Associations including the Canadian Beverage Association and Food and Consumer Products of Canada (FCPC) on regulatory proposals; and managing/implementing key regulatory change management initiatives such as upgrades to ingredient/labelling databases/systems and implementing new Canada labelling regulations.

This role requires in-depth knowledge of Canadian regulations, the ability to represent PepsiCo externally, excellent written and oral communication skills, and the ability to collaborate closely with cross-functional partners in Canada, US and Globally including R&D, Marketing, Supply Chain and Legal and external suppliers and certification bodies. This role reports to the Director, Regulatory Affairs for PepsiCo Canada.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

  1. Provide solutions-oriented regulatory strategy and guidance to business partners to support innovation and marketing initiatives.
  2. Leadership on complex regulatory files, such as government submissions for new ingredients, claims and products requiring government approvals (e.g., new ingredients and Temporary Marketing Authorizations issued by Health Canada).
  3. Leadership/management of key external affairs files, such as analyzing and providing input to proposed new regulations by Health Canada and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, inducing representing PepsiCo with Government and Industry Associations (e.g., proposed labelling regulations)
  4. Represent Regulatory Affairs and provide reviews/inputs/approvals throughout the New Product Development (NPD) Business Stage Gate, R&D Technical Stage Gate, and Business Planning/Sychro/Taskforce processes/meetings from concept to launch for innovation, productivity and brand stewardship projects.
  5. Guide U.S. R&D Product Development teams on Canadian regulatory requirements to support innovation/renovation initiatives.
  6. Regulatory guidance/compliance/approvals for products (ingredients, formulas, nutrition facts, claims, label information, label artwork), consumer insights research and communication material (advertising, marketing, education including online, in-store, print, broadcast).
  7. Manage product documentation for innovation and current portfolio (ingredients/formulas/labels/claims) using Product Vision database system ensuring all tasks are completed, routed for approvals, and issued to cross-functional partners as needed within tight business critical path timelines/deadlines.
  8. Manage certification approvals/processes/documentation with internal US/Canada partners and third party agencies (e.g., kosher, non-GMO, organic).
