Individuals with COVID-19 fall across a wide spectrum of care, ranging from critical illness to asymptomatic infection. As we approach the end of the second year of the pandemic, it has become apparent that many COVID-19 survivors, regardless of the severity of their illness, are experiencing long-term effects that impact their nutritional status and functional recovery. Using a case-based approach, this webinar will highlight the nutritional and functional recovery challenges faced by COVID-19 survivors and the important interplay between the two. We will also discuss pragmatic approaches to addressing these challenges.


LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  1. Recognize the similarities and differences in care needs for COVID-19 survivors across the continuum of care.
  2. Describe nutrition and functional rehabilitation practices in COVID-19 survivors.
  3. Summarize nutrition and physical rehabilitation practice recommendations for COVID-19 survivors
  4. Recognize the importance of the provision of multidisciplinary care, with a specific focus on the interplay between care provided by dietitians and physical therapists, in improving outcomes in COVID-19 survivors.


About the Speakers:


Lesley Moisey, RD, MSc, PhD

Lesley Moisey, RD, MSc, PhD - Dr. Lesley Moisey joined the College of Pharmacy and Nutrition at the University of Saskatchewan in 2017, as an Assistant Professor in Clinical Nutrition. She completed her PhD at the University of Waterloo where she examined nutrition rehabilitation in ICU survivors in the early phases of ward-based recovery, as well as developed expertise in body composition assessment using advanced modalities. Prior to pursuing her PhD, she completed her postgraduate dietetic internship at St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto, and then went on to work as an acute care dietitian for several years in Toronto. Her research interests focus on enhancing the nutritional health and recovery of the critically ill in survivorship; understanding the experiences of breast cancer survivors relating to food and nutrition; and interprofessional education and collaboration.


Julie Reid, PT, PhD

Julie Reid, PT, PhD – Postdoctoral fellow, is a critical care physiotherapist caring for patients at a Level 1 trauma centre and regional COVID unit. She holds a PhD and is currently completing a postdoctoral fellowship on research in aging, and functional recovery in patients hospitalized with COVID-19, as well as maintaining a clinical role. Julie's passion is in ICU rehabilitation research, and she is highly motivated to improve the healthcare experiences, health outcomes, and quality of life of Canadians.


Geneviève Dubé, Dt.P Dietician/Nutritionnist

Geneviève Dubé, Dt.P Dietician/Nutritionnist, graduated from Montreal University and has been a member of the OPDQ for 17 years. Her past experience includes working as a dietitian at Laval hospital, various CLSCs, in private practice and, research in gestational diabetes. Since 2008 she has been working full time at the Diabetic Center for the CISSS (Centre intégré de santé et de services sociaux) of Laval. Geneviève worked with OPDQ in the development of new shared professional diabetes activities with the College des Médecins. In 2018 she received a special MENTION award by OPDQ and the MERITE award by the Conseil Interprofessionel du Quebec. She received the PASSION award by the multidisciplinary services department of the CISSS of Laval in 2017. She regularly lectures on topics that fascinate her, diabetes, diet and sport in diabetics, healthy eating and no diet in weight control. She also is an insulin pump trainer and loves helping her patients take control of their diabetes. *Geneviève will not presenting at the webinar however, she has consented to sharing her personal experiences as a COVID-19 long hauler*
