With widespread interest in natural health products (NHPs) among numerous stakeholders, it is increasingly important to consider their efficacy within unique populations such as older adults and those engaged in sport performance, as well as those who are taking them for a general emphasis on health and well-being. Studies with a strong experimental design help discern between evidence-based findings and findings that have not been substantiated while weak, descriptive studies with indirect and correlative measures can lead to misleading conclusions. Thus, there is a need to reinforce important considerations for future studies, to discern the quality of the evidence. Moreover, well-designed studies benefit both the consumers and the industry and can make the job of regulatory agencies more feasible. The overall objective of this symposium is to identify considerations for future studies for this research area, and how scientists can be leaders in the field to ensure the best quality science is available for decision makers.

Learning Objectives:

Alison Duncan: Considerations for best practices in natural health product research for human health

This presentation will focus on research examining the efficacy of natural health products for improvement of human health. The definition and regulatory environment of natural health products will be summarized. Key planning steps including clinical trial registration, regulatory compliance and research ethics will be explored. Core methodological considerations and best practices in the execution of human studies will be summarized and the relevance of these studies to advancing knowledge about natural health products and human health will be overviewed. Learning objectives of this presentation include:

  1. 1.The definition and regulation of natural health products
  2. 2.How to properly plan for a human research study that examines natural health products and health outcomes
  3. 3.Appreciate best practices in the conduct of studies that examine natural health products and health outcomes

Philip Chilibeck: Natural Health Products, physical activity and exercise

There is a large consumer market for natural health products that are purported to improve exercise performance or improve body composition or functional performance when engaging in physical activity. There is a need for high quality research studies to provide evidence for and against the efficacy of natural health products. This presentation outlines key points for conducting proper research studies on the effects of natural health products for enhancing exercise performance and adaptations to physical activity or exercise training.

Learning objectives include:

Following these objectives will allow researchers to provide better evidence for and against the efficacy of natural health products for improving exercise performance or adaptations to physical activity or exercise training programs.
