WEBINAR DESCRIPTION:
Calcium plays a key role in the development of the bone matrix and is involved in many biological systems that contribute to body homeostasis. These functions include the regulation of fat and energy balance because of its ability to promote the formation of insoluble fatty acids "soaps" that accentuates intestinal fat loss and its potential to stimulate lipolysis and fat oxidation. A calcium specific appetite control theory has been proposed following the observation that insufficient calcium intake may represent a source of afferent signal favoring food consumption. The regulatory contribution of calcium also raises the possibility of an effect on aerobic fitness. From a nutritional standpoint, the maintenance of an adequate calcium intake remains a challenge for some individuals, especially for those who do not consume dairy products.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
By the end of this webinar the audience will be able to:
- To describe the mechanistic explanations of the impact of calcium on fat and energy balance
- To identify the relevant food choices to achieve an adequate calcium intake
Moderator: Bohdan Luhovyy, PhD (Mount Saint Vincent University)
ABOUT THE SPEAKER:
Professor Angelo Tremblay obtained his PhD in Physiology in Université Laval, Quebec City, and is currently a professor in the Department of Kinesiology in this university. His investigations are mostly oriented towards the study of factors influencing energy balance in humans with the intent to improve obesity management. Recently, his research has been focused on the study of non-traditional determinants of obesity such as short sleep duration, low calcium/dairy intake, insufficient vitamin intake, suboptimal feeding behaviours, demanding cognitive effort and persistent organic pollutants. Over the last years, he has documented the impact of pre- and probiotics on energy balance and behaviours.
