Webinar Description:

Picky eating is a common, yet challenging concern among young children, with 14-50% of parents identifying their preschoolers as picky eaters. During the preschool years, dietary intake and preferences are characterized by slowing growth rates and children developing a sense of autonomy over their eating and food selection. In my experience as clinician and researcher, this period can be difficult as caregivers are learning how to feed, while their children are learning how to eat. This session aims to reconceptualize our understanding of picky eating and the role caregivers play in supporting their children to become competent eaters.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Describe the bi-directional parent-child interactions that occur during feeding and the implications of this approach on the nutritional assessment of picky eaters.
  2. Identify practical tips for supporting picky eaters through responsive feeding.
  3. Understand some of the needs and challenges modern families experience when feeding picky eaters.
Moderator: Claire Tugault-Lafleur, PhD, RD/Dt.P. (She/Elle) - Assistant Professor, School of Nutritional Sciences, University of Ottawa
