Meeting the energy, protein and other nutrients needs of long term care (LTC) residents can be a challenge due to loss of appetite, dysphagia, gaps in menu planning and a multitude of other factors. Innovative, affordable ways to offer enriched and texture modified foods in LTC settings are needed. 

In this session, the impact of malnutrition/nutrition risk in LTC and the recommendations for enriched and texture modified foods from published standards will be introduced. Experts working in the development and delivery of enriched & texture modified foods will share practical solutions on available options. Building the theme of ACT, tips will be shared on how to:

By the end of this webinar the audience will be able to:

  1. Describe the recommendations for enriched and texture modified foods from LTC standards & need to advocate for these to be offered 
  2. Understand the barriers to poor food and fluid intake amongst long term care residents
  3. Utilize practical tips and resources towards menu planning and the implementation of fortified menus

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS:

Amrit Chhoker, BASc., RD s a seasoned professional with over 20 years of experience in long term care where she has been passionate about improving the quality of life for residents.  In her current role she is responsible for menu and nutrition management software, operational support, wellness, and quality management. Most recently she has been working on initiatives to enhance the dining experience for our residents including those with specific dietary needs such as requiring texture modified diets.  Her passion for senior's nutrition has resulted in volunteering with various organizations on advocacy work i.e. Ontario Seniors Nutrition and Advocacy committee, Canadian Malnutrition Task Force LTC working group, and Gerontology network LTC working group.


Declan Henderson is a licensed Registered Dietitian under the UK's Health Care Professions Council. With insightful experience in nutrition care from clinical practice in both acute and long-term care settings, he is dedicated to improving the lives of individuals affected by malnutrition and swallowing difficulties. For the last 6 years, his career has focused on developing food-first solutions for managing malnutrition and dysphagia across Europe and North America. Currently, Declan serves as the Healthcare Commercial Manager at apetito HFS in Ontario. He is an active member of the Canadian dysphagia community, organizing key events like the 2023 and 2024 Canadian IDDSI Festival. In fall 2023, he joined the Canadian IDDSI Reference Group Committee, enhancing his involvement in dysphagia advocacy and research.
