Health Canada has put together a short survey to gather more insights on how the supplemented food awareness resources in the online toolkit are being used by CNS members. You can access the survey in English or in French.

Join us for an exciting and engaging webinar with Health Canada to learn about their brand new awareness initiative on supplemented foods and their labels. Health Canada will share their journey developing this initiative with stakeholders, including CNS. What’s a supplemented food, you might ask? You’ll learn all about these foods, their labels, and the regulations behind them during the webinar. You’ll also have the opportunity to share your ideas on how we can make sure this awareness initiatives reaches as many people in Canada as possible. You won’t want to miss this!

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS:

Elaine De Grandpré has been working in the field of nutrition for over 30 years. She received her Bachelor of Science in Nutrition from the University of Montreal and her Masters of Health Science in Community Nutrition from the University of Toronto. Her areas of expertise are nutrition education and communication. She is currently Manager of Knowledge Translation and Exchange in the Bureau of Nutritional Sciences of the Food Directorate at Health Canada.  Using a health literacy lens, her team leads the development, implementation and analysis of social science research and consultations to help shape policies and regulations. They also develop content and educational resources for intermediaries. Elaine is also a part-time professor at the University of Ottawa in the Food Policy and Regulatory Affairs certificate.

Rana Wahba holds a bachelor's degree in nutrition sciences and a master's degree in interdisciplinary health sciences from the University of Ottawa. As a trilingual Registered Dietitian, Rana joined Health Canada in 2016. She has experience applying a health literacy lens to social science research and to the development of nutrition policies and regulations within the Knowledge, Translation & Exchange Team in the Nutrition Regulations & Standards Division in the Food Directorate. She has been involved in various Healthy Eating Strategy initiatives such as front-of-package labelling, nutrition labelling and sodium reduction, as well as labelling awareness initiatives on supplemented foods.

Jennifer Giurgevich graduated from the University of Western Ontario with a Master of Science in Foods and Nutrition, a Bachelor of Science in Foods and Nutrition, and a Bachelor of Science specializing in Medical Sciences. Jenn has been working in the field of nutrition for over 13 years. Jennifer joined the Office of Nutrition Policy and Promotion in 2011, and recently moved over to the Knowledge, Translation and Exchange team at the Food Directorate in 2019. Jennifer specializes in nutrition education and communication. She has been involved in various Healthy Eating Strategy initiatives, such as Canada’s Food Guide, Front-of-Package labelling, and nutrition labelling. Jenn has co-led various awareness and education campaigns over the years, such as the Nutrition Facts Education Campaign, the Eat Well Campaign, and the most recent Supplemented Foods Awareness Initiative. Jenn is also a former nutrition professor for Brescia University College (UWO, 2015-2017).

Yasmin Yorish graduated from the University of Ottawa with a Master’s of Health Administration and McGill University with a Bachelor of Science in Microbiology and Immunology. She joined Health Canada's Food Directorate in 2001 and has worked in various roles from strategic and operational planning, regional policy advisor, food safety evaluator, and regional program manager. Currently, Yasmin is the Food Policy Liaison Officer for BC Region, Health Canada. Her position entails 2 main responsibilities - working on various policy and regulatory files with Health Canada's Food Directorate and liaising with all levels of stakeholders in food safety and nutrition, including all 3 levels of government, industry and their associations, NGO's, health professionals, academia and consumer groups. She is also active in food safety education and outreach to consumers.
