The webinar will review current evidence implicating the gut microbiota in cardiometabolic health and how dysbiosis can lead to obesity-linked diseases. It will also review recent advances on key microbial factors that are regulated by diets and nutrients and how probiotics and prebiotics can be harnessed to alleviate obesity and metabolic diseases.
Learning Objectives:
- Better understand how the gut microbiota is involved in metabolic homeostasis
- To know what microbial factors are key to influence energy metabolism, glucose homeostasis and insulin resistance, and other T2D risk factors
- Understanding how we can harness the microbiome to prevent or mitigate cardiometabolic diseases

About the Speaker
Dr. Marette is a Professor of Medicine and researcher at the Heart and Lung Institute Hospital Center, and at the Institute of Nutrition and Functional Foods at Laval University. He holds a research Chair on the pathogenesis of insulin resistance and cardiovascular diseases (CVD). He is an international renowned expert on how nutrition and food ingredients can modulate the gut microbiota to protect against obesity-linked intestinal inflammation, fatty liver disease and type 2 diabetes. His research is funded by several Funding agencies in Canada (CIHR, NSERC, CFREF, Weston Fnd), in Quebec (FRQS, FRQNT) and in the US (NIH). His research work has been published in >300 papers, reviews and book chapters and he was invited to give more than a hundred lectures at various national & international conferences in the last 10 years. He served as Editor-in-Chief for the Am J Physiol: Endo & Metab. from 2016-2022 and has authored two books in the last few years. Dr. Marette has received several awards for his work including the prestigious Charles Best Award and Lectureship from the University of Toronto for his overall contribution to the advancement of scientific knowledge in the field of diabetes.
