Nutritional Screening and assessment, and treatment and follow-up of  hospitalized children with malnutrition should be organized by a multidisciplinary team and appropriate nutritional pathways are needed.

CMTF’s Peds Working Group has developed evidence-based strategies around screening, assessment, and treatment of hospitalized children however, there are challenges implementing pathways in hospitals related to barriers around knowledge, resources and logistics. Moreover, there is a gap in the organization and provision of nutrition care once these children are discharged from hospital. Therefore, it is important to learn from experiences in other countries that have managed to adopt guidelines, including the incorporation of hospital quality indicators around malnutrition care, and are currently engaged in further research into post-discharge care.

In this session, one of the founding members of the Dutch Malnutrition Steering Group, will discuss the Dutch approach and review the processes for implementing nutrition screening for children in the hospital and in the community in the Netherlands. Lessons learned from the mandatory reporting of malnutrition to the Dutch government will also be shared along with resources and tools.  Recommendations will be made on how these findings can be applied to a Canadian setting, in a team-based approach.

1. Learn about the latest evidence and knowledge related to screening and treatment of malnutrition in the pediatric hospital setting,
2. Familiarize themselves with approaches to multidisciplinary post-discharge care of malnourished children in the community,

4. Understand how the findings can be applied to their settings.

About the Speaker:

Prof Koen Joosten is a paediatric-intensivist and professor paediatrics at ErasmusMC-Sophia Children’s Hospital, in the Netherlands. He became a paediatrician in 1993 and pediatric-intensivist in 1995. In 1999 he received his PhD, which focused on metabolism, endocrinology, and nutrition of the critically ill child. He continued research activities in this field and has supervised many PhD projects in nutrition and metabolism. He leads the nutritional research team at the pediatric intensive care in Rotterdam and is one of the principal of investigators of the largest nutritional intervention trial (PEPaNIC trial) which have been performed together with the Catholic University Leuven and with Stollery’s Children’s Hospital Edmonton Canada. Since 2019 he is professor “nutrition and metabolism of the sick child” at the ErasmusMC in Rotterdam and research director of the pediatric intensive care. He has the chair of the nutrition committee of the Dutch Pediatric Association and is member of the Dutch Health Council (Gezondheidsraad). He has the chair of the special interest group pediatrics of ESPEN, course director of the LLL pediatrics of ESPEN and associate editor of Clinical Nutrition since 2011. He has published more than 280 peer-reviewed articles. His current H-Index is 45.

About the Moderator:

Dr. Jessie Hulst is a staff gastroenterologist in the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition of The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto and an Associate Professor in the Department of Pediatrics and Department of Nutritional Sciences of the University of Toronto. Before joining SickKids in July 2018, she was a Staff Gastroenterologist in Sophia Children's Hospital, Rotterdam in the Netherlands, from 2011-2018. Dr. Hulst obtained her PhD on the topic of nutritional assessment in critically ill children in 2004 and has been involved in both national and international research about this topic since. In 2009, she developed a simple nutritional (risk) screening tool (STRONGkids), which is used in multiple hospitals around the world. As the Chair of Pediatric section of the Dutch Malnutrition Taskforce she was involved in the development and implementation of a nationwide pediatric malnutrition pathway and development of mandatory National Hospital Quality Indicators on pediatric malnutrition. She is currently the co-chair of the Pediatric working group of the Canadian Malnutrition Task Force and working on the implementation of a pediatric Malnutrition Pathway in Canada. At SickKids, Jessie is running a complex Nutrition clinic and is a physician within the Group for improvement of Intestinal function and Treatment (GIFT), she is the hospital PN medical lead and the chair of the Nutritional Advisory Committee. She has published > 90 peer-reviewed manuscripts and >10 book chapters.
