This webinar will present how nutrition major students who are interested in the area of sports nutrition can benefit from a recently developed practicum course named Applied Sports Nutrition where they have opportunities to gain hands on experience working with varsity teams during the academic year. A great benefit has been observed in varsity athletes in terms of nutrition knowledge through this program. This webinar provides an applied education model for other universities with active nutrition and dietetics departments.

Learning Objectives:


At the end of the webinar, participants will be able to:

  1. To learn basic nutrition concepts such as utilizing nutrition information, eating at regular intervals, maintaining adequate hydration and having a healthy body image and basic food skills such as planning meals and shopping for groceries.
  2. To learn about performance nutrition including fueling before and during practice or competition, fueling for recovery and to understand nutrient functions and interactions and eating for performance while travelling.
  3. To understand performance enhancement including optimizing body weight and composition, continuous and gradual improvements in eating habits, using supplements safely and adjusting nutrition for off-season or post-career.

About the speaker:


Dr. Moji Kaviani is currently an Associate Professor at Acadia University in the School of Nutrition and Dietetics. He is also the lead of the sports nutrition group providing nutritional support to all Acadia University varsity teams. Dr. Kaviani is a Certified Exercise Physiologist with the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology. He earned his PhD in Kinesiology in 2016, working with Dr. Phil Chilibeck. In his thesis work, he examined the benefits of carbohydrates with low-glycemic index on performance in endurance athletes (with one study on cyclists and another on soccer players) and on metabolic health when combined with exercise in overweight and obese individuals. His research focuses are on the effect of nutrients and food components alone or combined with physical activity on whole body physiology and health status as well as sport performance in athletes. Dr. Kaviani also investigates effects of sport/dietary supplements on health and performance outcomes. He is currently investigating the impact of green Match tea on health outcomes in individuals with type 2 diabetes. He also looks at New Zealand blackcurrant extract supplementation on cardiovascular function and sport performance in rugby and football players. He enjoys outdoor biking and running.
