Indirect calorimetry (IC) offers precise measurement of energy expenditure, and has been widely used in critically ill patients to guide caloric intake and help maintain critical lean body mass. Predictive equations do not accurately predict required energy needs compared to IC. This webinar will provide valuable information on the use of indirect calorimetry for critically ill patients and other outpatient populations.

About the Speakers:

Dr. Maria Ines Pinto-Sanchez obtained her MD certification in 2002, and completed her Gastroenterology training in 2008 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. She joined the Farncombe Institute at McMaster in 2010 as clinical research fellow and obtained Master in Science degree in 2014. She completed a Clinical Gastroenterology and Nutrition fellow in 2017 in the Division of Gastroenterology at McMaster University and has obtained Clinician Nutrition Specialist Certification from the National Board of Nutrition Support Certification (NBNSC).Dr. Pinto-Sanchez is currently an active medical staff at the Gastroenterology Division at McMaster University and Hamilton Health Sciences where she provides consultation services in the area of gastroenterology and Nutrition. She is the director of the Celiac Clinic at McMaster University. Her clinical and research interest include the diagnosis and treatment of different gastrointestinal conditions with focus on celiac disease and gluten related disorders. She has received different awards and has over 50 publications, most in high impact journals.

Nicole Janisse is a registered dietitian working in critical care at the Juravinski Hospital in Hamilton, ON. Nicole holds a bachelor of Applied Science in Food and Nutrition from Ryerson University and completed her dietetic internship at Hamilton Health Sciences (HHS). She continued her clinical dietetics career at HHS, working first in oncology and malignant hematology. For the past 15 years, Nicole has worked in critical care where she provides specialized nutrition support to a complex patient population and supports the learning needs of dietetic interns and medical residents.

She has consulted for print media and held a role as an Instructor at Mohawk College in Hamilton ON. Over the past few years she has developed a special interest in metabolics and calorimetry. She is a published author in this area and presented her research findings at CNS 2019.
