Functional gastrointestinal disorders in infancy and childhood, including colic and constipation are a spectrum of conditions that constitute a large portion of pediatric medical attention and practice. While the pathophysiology and etiology for some of them is today better understood, the exact mechanisms explaining their signs and symptoms remain to be elucidated. The role of the intestinal microbiota and the potential interventions that derive from this understanding are increasingly being described. We will review the spectrum, diagnostic criteria, epidemiology, and approaches to management of these disorders in early life.
Learning Objectives:
By end of the presentation, participants should:
- Understand the definition of Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders (FGIDs)
- Be familiar with the evolution and changes in definition of FGIDs (Rome criteria)
- Understand the potential mechanisms associated with FGIDs in infants, particularly the potential role of the intestinal microbiota
- Discuss management options for infantile colic and regurgitation, including nutritional management and use of probiotics
