Up to 10% of children are estimated to have a food allergy. Recent high-quality evidence from randomized controlled trials and observational cohort studies have demonstrated that early introduction of allergenic foods in infancy, particularly peanut and hen's egg, may reduce the risk of food allergy development, especially among infants at high-risk for developing an allergy. When primary prevention is unsuccessful, infants may still develop a food allergy. In these cases, clinical advances in oral immunotherapy (where small incremental doses of the food allergy are provided) have created opportunities for treatment of the food allergy. In this webinar, we will discuss the evolving evidence around primary prevention of food allergies, and oral immunotherapy as a potential treatment of food allergy.

- Understand the importance of regular ingestion to maintain tolerance once a food has been introduced

About the speakers:
Dr. Edmond S. Chan is a Pediatric Allergist at the BC Children's Hospital (BCCH) Allergy Clinic in Vancouver, BC, Canada. He is a University of British Columbia (UBC) Clinical Professor, Clinical Investigator (BCCH Research Institute), and Head of the UBC Division of Allergy & Immunology at BCCH, where he leads a dedicated food allergy research program. He has 170 peer-reviewed publications, primarily on food allergy, and is a co-author of several national/international guidelines on food allergy and eosinophilic esophagitis including the first Canadian guidelines on food oral immunotherapy. He is on the Executive of the Canadian Society of Allergy & Clinical Immunology, as Vice President. He is on the Executive of the Canadian Paediatric Society's Allergy Section. He is on Food Allergy Canada's healthcare advisory board, and steering committee for Canada's National Food Allergy Action Plan.
Brock Williams is a PhD Candidate in the Food, Nutrition and Health Program at the University of British Columbia. Brock is also a Registered Dietitian, and supports the Food Allergy Immunotherapy Program in the Division of Allergy and Immunology at BC Children's Hospital in his role as a Clinical Research Dietitian. His research interests include: paediatric clinical nutrition, micronutrients, and infant/child feeding practices.
