The 2019 Canada’s Food Guide (CFG) provides recommendations on healthy food choices (what to eat, e.g., choose whole grain foods) and eating behaviours (how to eat, e.g., take time to eat). The development of practical and well-evaluated tools will enable researchers to assess these dimensions of the CFG in various settings, contributing to a strong and consistent evidence base to inform evaluation of the CFG and related policy development.

Health Canada worked with experts and partners to develop three tools. The first one is the Healthy Eating Food Index 2019 (HEFI-2019), which can be applied to food intake data, such as 24-hour dietary recalls, to assess the extent Canadians are following CFG guidance on healthy food choices. The other two tools are short questionnaires (screeners) that can be used to assess healthy food choices and eating behaviours, respectively.

In this session, speakers will provide an overview of the processes for developing and evaluating the tools, as well as guidance for their use given their strengths and limitations

Learning Objectives:

At the end of the webinar, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the process for developing and evaluating the three CFG research tools;
  2. Use these CFG research tools in a research setting;
  3. Identify practical considerations for the appropriate use of the CFG research tools.
