Food production impacts the environment, but Canadian farmers have become world leaders in how to produce food with a reduce environmental footprint when compared with food production in other countries. Dr. Smyth’s presentation will provide evidence on how farmers have improved the production of sustainable food through the adoption of innovative technologies and efficient application of crop inputs such as chemicals and fertilizers. His presentation will highlight how the increased efficiency of crop input applications results in increased sustainability and reduced biodiversity impacts.

Ian Affleck, MSc - CropLife Canada
CropLife Canada will present research that shows how plant science innovations, like pesticides and plant breeding innovations, deliver a wide range of benefits to Canadians. The webinar will provide an overview of Helping Canada Grow, a CropLife Canada initiative, aimed to help Canadians understand the benefits of pesticides and plant breeding innovations. We aim to translate the science and present supporting evidence in a relevant and relatable way. Together, we can help share the story of how plant science innovations deliver benefits to Canadians.
Nutrition professionals will learn how plant science innovations:
- Contribute to and abundant, safe, affordable and nutritious food
- Help farmers be more productive while using less resources

About the Speakers:
Dr. Stuart Smyth is a Professor in the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics at the University of Saskatchewan, where he holds the Agri-Food Innovation and Sustainability Enhancement Chair. His research focuses on sustainability, agriculture, innovation and food. Dr. Smyth publishes a weekly blog on these topics at: www.SAIFood.ca. With well over 150 academic publications, Dr. Smyth is recognized as a leading expert on barriers to innovation and regulatory efficiency. Dr. Smyth specializes in research on regulatory barriers to food security, especially those that restrict investments into new plant breeding technologies, such as genome editing and that delay, or prevent, the commercialization of genetically modified and genome-edited crops.
Ian Affleck is the vice-president of plant biotechnology for CropLife Canada. In this role, Ian works with domestic and international agricultural stakeholders and governments on the development of policies, regulations, and science related to plant biotechnology. Prior to joining CropLife Canada, Ian worked at the Canadian Food Inspection Agency for 10 years, where his work focused on the regulation of novel plants and new varieties. He holds a bachelor of science in agriculture from the Nova Scotia Agricultural College, concentrating on agronomy and pest management. He also holds a master’s degree in agriculture from the University of Guelph, specializing in horticulture and plant breeding and has been involved in agriculture from an early age, having grown up on a potato farm in Bedeque, Prince Edward Island.
