Speaker:  Ana Deaconu, PhD  (McGill University)

Webinar description:  This webinar will present a novel participatory data collection method designed specifically for nutrition research, called the participatory 24-hour dietary recall. Designed as part of a participatory research project with Indigenous farmers in Ecuador, the method aims to support inclusive engagement and create a reciprocal learning experience both for participants and the research team, all while producing robust dietary data. The resultant method produces both quantitative and qualitative data, and facilitates the integration of nutrition data with interdisciplinary research objectives. This webinar will present the participatory 24-hour dietary recall and discuss its performance through an empirical comparison with conventional dietary data from the study population. Further, it will prepare webinar attendees to apply and adapt the method to their own research and to analyze the data produced using validated dietary indicators. Finally, participants will be invited to share their own experience with participatory data collection methods for nutrition research.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Learn about the development, validity and application of the participatory 24-hour dietary recall;
  2. be able to adapt and apply the participatory 24-hour recall method in their own research.

Moderator: Malek Batal, PhD (Université de Montréal)

About the Speaker:

Ana Deaconu is a postdoctoral researcher with McGill University's Geography Department. Aiming to support equitable and resilient food systems, she uses a participatory action research approach and mixed methods to explore links between agriculture, nutrition and health. Currently, she is involved in research projects in Guatemala and Ecuador that work with Indigenous farmers practicing agroecology. These projects explore how agroecology, as both a farming strategy and social phenomenon, can advance the health and well-being of farmers and their environments. Ana holds a B.S. and M.S. in Earth Systems from Stanford University, and a PhD in Nutrition from Université de Montréal.
