Speakers:
Joanne Slavin, PhD, RDN(University of Minnesota) - "Gut check: Why dietary fibre leads to better health"
Anissa Armet, PhD, RD (University of Alberta) - "Dietary fibre and chronic disease: Recent evidence, misconceptions, and practical approaches"
Webinar description:
Dietary fibre – found naturally in whole-plant foods such as vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and legumes – is a key component of a healthy diet to prevent chronic diseases. Recent research has revealed that different types and sources of dietary fibre can have distinct effects on human health, potentially mediated, at least in part, by the gut microbiome. This webinar will explore the latest research and underlying mechanisms for how dietary fibre benefits human health. Common misconceptions will be addressed and practical strategies to increase fibre intake will be shared so that healthcare professionals are better equipped to support patients in achieving higher fibre intakes.
Learning Objectives:
By the end of the webinar, participants will be able to:
- Summarize the mechanisms for how different types of dietary fibre benefit human health.
- Understand the latest research showing how increased fibre intake can reduce risk of chronic diseases.
- Recognize common misconceptions about dietary fibre and barriers to increasing intake.
- Provide patients with effective strategies to increase fibre intake.
Moderator: Alison M. Duncan, PhD, RD, FDC, FCNS (University of Guelph)
About the Speakers:
Joanne L. Slavin, PhD, RDN is a professor in the Department of Food Science and Nutrition at the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities, College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences. She teaches Advanced Human Nutrition, a writing intensive course twice yearly. With the help of current and former graduate students (n=90), she has authored more than 350 scientific articles on dietary fiber, carbohydrates, whole grains, protein, snacking, gut health, brain health, and sustainable agriculture. Joanne was a member of the 2010 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee (DGAC) She is a a member of numerous scientific societies, including the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND), the American Society for Nutrition (ASN), and the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT). Dr. Slavin has given more than 400 scientific presentations around the world. Dr. Slavin grew up on a 119 acre farm in Walworth, Wisconsin which she owns and manages She has BS, MS, and PhD degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and is a Registered Dietitian (RDN).
Anissa Armet, PhD, RD is a registered dietitian and postdoctoral researcher at the University of Alberta. Anissa completed her PhD in Nutrition and Metabolism in March 2024. She then transitioned into her postdoc to research the effects of microbiome-targeted dietary interventions in adult and pediatric patients with inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). She uses machine learning to determine if the gut microbiome predicts clinical responses in the context of precision nutrition. Anissa herself is a patient with IBD that has used dietary strategies to manage her disease, which is a key motivator for her to conduct this research and help other patients use nutrition as medicine. Anissa is passionate about creating knowledge translation strategies, such as evidence-based cookbooks, to improve public access to research findings.
