Michael Narvey, MD, FRCPC, FAAP (Health Sciences Centre Winnipeg) - "Reducing mortality with an exclusive human milk diet – One center’s journey and research into benefits"

Presentation description: Explore the background behind one centre’s experience in bringing an exclusive human milk diet to their patients.  What were the challenges and what did we learn along the way.  Research will be shared that helped to shape our local practice and influenced the diets of our smallest patients.

Learning objectives: 

  1. Understand the impact that avoidance of bovine protein may have in a real world institution.
  2. Learn about the impact of exclusive human milk diets on the microbiome of extremely preterm infants.

About the Speakers:   

Dr. Narvey began his training in Pediatrics at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg where he completed a year of further training in Neonatology.  This was followed by two years of Neonatal fellowship at the University of Alberta in Edmonton. Afterwards he began his career as a Neonatologist in the same city and over the 6 years he spent there, his career included being both the Fellowship Program Director and the Medical Director for a level II unit.  In late 2010 he accepted a position in Winnipeg to become the Section Head of Neonatology and held this role until January 2025.  He is past Chair of the Canadian Pediatric Society’s Fetus and Newborn Committee serving on the committee for 9 years. As of May 2025 he became the Vice President of the Canadian Pediatric Society.


Magnus Domellöf is Professor of Pediatrics at Umeå University and Senior consultant in Neonatology at Umeå University Hospital, Sweden. He received his PhD degree at Umeå University in collaboration with the University of California, Davis. He is currently leading several large research projects related to neonatology, paediatric nutrition and neurodevelopment and has, according to Scopus, more than 270 publications in the field; an h-index of 64 and 14 409 citations (as at Oct-25). He is a longstanding member of the European Society for Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition, and chaired the society’s Committee on Nutrition between 2018-2021. Prof Domellöf is the chair of the Nutrition Committee of the Swedish Neonatal Society and is Director of Research and Quality Improvement at the neonatal intensive care unit at Umeå University Hospital since 2021. Professor Domellöf can be contacted at magnus.domellof@umu.se
