Speakers:

Michael A Tsoukas, MD, FRCPC (McGill University Health Centre) and Alexia Le Blanc, RD/Dt.P, BSc (McGill University)

Webinar description:

Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1s) have transformed obesity treatment, helping achieve an average 15–25% weight reduction after about one year of therapy. However, approximately one-third of that weight loss may be from muscle. Recent findings have also exposed nutritional deficiencies developed in over 20% of patients on GLP-1s within the first year of therapy. These findings emphasize the need for nutritional screening and support alongside patients’ weight loss journey.

Learning Objectives:

By the end of the webinar participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the changes to body composition and muscle mass experienced by people taking GLP-1s
  2. Explain the importance of adequate protein intake to help preserve muscle mass and assess how high-protein nutritional supplements can help support the nutritional needs of people on GLP-1s

Moderator: Stéphanie Chevalier, RD, PhD (McGill University)

About the Speakers:

Dr Michael Tsoukas is an Associate Professor of Medicine, Division of Endocrinology of the McGill University Health Centre and Research Investigator of the Research Institute of McGill and Hygea Medical Clinic. He completed his residency in medicine at Tuft’s University in Boston and subsequently trained in Endocrinology at McGill University. Upon completion, he pursued a post-graduate research fellowship in diabetes and obesity at Harvard University (Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center), with a focus on GLP-1 receptor pharmacotherapy, brain signaling, and enterohormone treatments. Further training involved pathophysiological regulation of GLP-1 receptor agonists important in energy homeostasis, diabetes, and obesity.

Currently, Dr Tsoukas is the Co-Director of the Metabolic Centre of Excellence of the McGill University Health Centre and Director of Endocrinology at the Montreal General Hospital. He continues to conduct clinical interventional studies and has authored over 50 articles in peer-reviewed journals, chapters, and abstracts.

Alexia Le Blanc, RD/Dt.P, BSc (McGill University) -  Alexia Le Blanc is a Registered Dietitian working in obesity, metabolic disorders, and  disordered eating. She holds a Bachelor of Science from McGill University in Dietetics and  is currently completing a Master’s degree in Translational Medicine at McGill University,  with a research focus on malnutrition.
She practices at the Glen Center for Specialized Medicine Clinic and the Metabolic Weight  Optimization Clinic from the McGill University Health Center. Her clinical work focuses on  behavior change and the prevention and management of chronic diseases within a  multidisciplinary care model.
