Webinar description:

As of April 1, 2026, the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) has issued a new direction for coding malnutrition in hospitals. This new direction mandates the assignment of a code for a documented diagnosis of malnutrition classified within the block E40–E46.

In this session, speakers will review the need for stronger malnutrition data, the role of CIHI in accelerating improvements in health care, health system performance and population health through data, and the impact of the new coding direction on advancing the data capture of malnutrition across Canada’s health system. Practical recommendations for diagnosing and documenting malnutrition to ensure proper coding will be provided.

This session is relevant to front line registered dietitians and health care professionals involved in nutrition care, managers in any hospital setting, those wanting to advocate for better malnutrition care and educators with an interest in clinical nutrition.

Learning Objectives:

By the end of the webinar, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe CIHI’s new coding direction for malnutrition
  2. Explain how nutrition assessment and documentation practices in hospitals can impact the new coding
  3. Recognize the importance of documenting malnutrition for patient care
