This webinar is brought to you by CMTF as part of Canadian Malnutrition Awareness Week™  October 5 - 9, 2026  "Lead The Change"

This webinar is presented in English / Ce webinaire sera présenté en Anglais.

Webinar description:

Despite advances in enteral and oral nutrition, many hospitalized patients- particularly those that are acutely ill, recovering from surgery or experiencing GI dysfunction- continue to receive inadequate amounts of energy, protein, and essential micronutrients. These patients can become malnourished rapidly, increasing their risk of infections, complications, prolonged hospital stays, readmissions, and poorer clinical outcomes, while placing additional strain on healthcare resources.

Parenteral nutrition (PN) can provide significant clinical benefits when oral or enteral nutrition is not feasible or sufficient. However, uncertainty surrounding the use of PN often results in delays or underutilization, even among patients who would benefit from early nutrition intervention. Greater awareness of current evidence and best practices is needed to support timely, individualized nutrition care.

This webinar reviews how nutrition screening and assessment identify hospitalized adults who may benefit from parenteral nutrition (PN), either compounded or multi-chamber bags. Speakers will discuss practical approaches to individualizing PN prescriptions, preventing common complications such as overfeeding and refeeding syndrome, and monitoring therapy throughout the course of illness. Using clinical cases, participants will learn evidence-based strategies to optimize nutrition support and improve patient outcomes.

This webinar is intended for dietitians, physicians, pharmacists, nurses, and other healthcare professionals involved in the nutrition support of hospitalized adult patients.

Learning Objectives:

By the end of the webinar, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify hospitalized adults who are appropriate candidates for individualized parenteral nutrition using nutrition screening and assessment.
  2. Apply practical strategies to prescribe, monitor, and adjust parenteral nutrition while minimizing complications such as overfeeding and refeeding syndrome.
  3. Implement evidence-based parenteral nutrition practices that support multidisciplinary care and improve patient outcomes.
