Webinar description:
With improvements in cancer screening and cancer treatments, the number of cancer survivors has steadily increased. However, knowledge and understanding of cancer survivor needs are still in infancy. Today, we will explore nutrition research in cancer survivorship and discuss ways to support the cancer survivors’ journey.
Learning Objectives:
- Gain insight into the cancer survivorship landscape post-treatment and the impacts of nutrition
- Identify nutrition recommendations for cancer survivors’ post-treatment and factors to consider for implementation
- Through the lens of a head and neck cancer survivorship example, understand how optimal nutrition and health post-cancer treatment differs between cancer types
Moderator: Carla Prado, PhD, RD, FCAHS (University of Alberta)
About the Speakers:
Daniela Fierini is a Registered Dietitian with the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre's Cancer Rehabilitation and Survivorship Program, where she co-facilitates innovative and interactive group culinary and nutrition programs. Daniela is a Dietitians of Canada Oncology Nutrition Network Executive team member. In 2020, Daniela contributed to international malnutrition research with a publication in the Clinical Nutrition Experimental Journal and, in 2014, facilitated the implementation of the first malnutrition screening program in Kuwait as part of The Princess Margaret's international partnerships. Inspired by people living with cancer, Daniela led the development of 'Goes Down Easy: Recipes to Help You Cope with the Challenge of Eating during Cancer Treatment' in 2006—the first Canadian cancer symptom management cookbook.
Michele Davies is a Registered Dietitian working with the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre's Head and Neck Cancer Survivorship Programme since 2017. Michele has contributed to developing the “Getting Back on Track” class, providing patients with education and tools to better manage ongoing symptoms after their head and neck cancer treatment. Michele has contributed to related research in the Journal of Supportive Care in Cancer. Inspired by ¬survivors’ stories of the impacts that late effects of cancer treatment have on their quality of life, Michele has worked to offer a greater breadth of nutrition services within the program to meet these needs, including providing enteral nutrition support and guidance in using blenderized tube feeding to patients that have expressed interest. Michele has also provided formal education to the Princess Margaret Head and Neck Cancer team regarding the research on the use of blenderized tube feeding to enhance the program’s patient-centred care further.
