Laboratory Instructor Food & Nutrition

The Department of Human Nutrition invites applications for a Probationary Appointment as a Laboratory Instructor for a 39-week contract beginning August 12, 2024 and ending May 9, 2025. Pending satisfactory performance, the contract may be renewable on an annual basis for a total of two academic years before being considered for a continuing appointment.

Under the guidance of faculty members in charge of each course, the lab instructor prepares, supervises, and grades student laboratory activities and assignments at all levels of the undergraduate curriculum. Responsibilities include setting up teaching lab apparatus and maintaining it in working order; preparing/revising student lab manuals and safety documents; revising existing lab activities and developing new ones; maintaining and purchasing equipment and supply inventories; monitoring lab safety; supporting nutrition and food science educational and entrepreneurship programs, including activities with community agencies such as the Antigonish Farmers Market; as well as other duties assigned by the Department Chair.

The ideal candidate will have experience with laboratory equipment used in teaching nutrition and food science, and experience working with students in an academic setting. Experience with quantity food production, menu planning, recipe conversion, nutrient analysis hardware and software (including Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint, Foodservice Management Software such as the CBORD platform), and training in lab safety, first-aid, HACCP, and food safety are required. Familiarity with sensory evaluation, food guidance tools and dietary requirements, and eligibility to practice dietetics in Nova Scotia would also be assets. The Department is seeking candidates who are committed to contributing to StFX's priorities of equity, diversity, and inclusion. The successful candidate will have a bachelor's degree in Human Nutrition, Food Science or Food Service and two to three years relevant work experience.
