Job Description:
The Department of Food and Human Nutritional Sciences, Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences, University of Manitoba invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor focusing on "Food, Culture and Health". The position starts January 1, 2022, or as soon as possible thereafter. Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
Responsibilities:
The position will contribute to the Department of Food and Human Nutritional Sciences' teaching, research and service functions grounded in the University of Manitoba's research priority area related to Safe, Healthy, Just and Sustainable Food Systems. The departmental strategic areas include: 1) Food Quality and Acceptability; 2) Food Safety and Preservation; 3) Metabolic and Molecular Nutrition; and 4) Applied Human Nutrition. The department offers undergraduate and graduate programs in both Food Science and Human Nutritional Sciences. The Food Science undergraduate program is approved by the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT), and the Human Nutritional Sciences undergraduate program is accredited by the Partnership for Dietetic Education and Practice. The successful candidate will join a community of innovators that supports collaborations. In addition to food and nutritional sciences, the Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences has expertise in food systems research, with a strong emphasis on sustainable agricultural production systems. Furthermore, the University of Manitoba is home to the Truth and Reconciliation Centre, Ongomiizwin Indigenous Institute of Health and Healing, and Centre for Human Rights Research, thus providing unique resources for the further development of research programs linking food and culture to health. The city of Winnipeg is home to large immigrant, refugee and indigenous communities, and maintains a strong commitment to human rights. Additionally, the province of Manitoba is supportive of food systems research, and the successful candidate will be expected to create linkages with stakeholders committed to collaborations. These attributes make an ideal environment to foster a program in "Food, Culture and Health".
Qualifications:
The ideal applicant is expected to have a critical social sciences perspective towards food, culture and health. Qualified applicants must possess a PhD in applied human nutritional sciences or a closely related discipline; a record of research as demonstrated by scholarly publications, which might include publications arising from research as a graduate student and/or post-PhD training; the potential for developing an active, externally-funded research program, including supervision of graduate students; demonstrated ability or potential for high quality undergraduate and graduate teaching; experience in or potential to develop effective collaborations with stakeholders; and excellent oral and written communication skills in English. The successful candidate will be required to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in their areas of expertise including, but not limited to, food culture and Indigenous health. The potential to be registered by the College of Dietitians of Manitoba is preferred.
