A. OVERALL PURPOSE OF THIS POSITION
Purpose: The incumbent is responsible for the day-to-day operation and management of activities in the Nutrition Suite of the PERFORM Centre.
Reporting Relationship: The incumbent reports to the Assistant Director, Education and Community Engagement Programs.
Accountability: The incumbent is accountable for ensuring the smooth operation and the optimal performance of the Nutrition Suite through oversight of its research, education and community activities. The incumbent will provide support, and guidance to students and community participants, oversee internship students, and assist researchers with establishing and implementing research protocols in the Nutrition Suite.
Position Scope: The incumbent is responsible for managing the budget, coordinating the activities of multiple research users, supervising technicians, compiling and updating Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and PERFORM operating documents, providing technical advice, and developing research relationships for the suite within and outside of Concordia. They facilitate academic and academic units, and community stakeholders to provide: technical input into research protocol development and delivery; content planning, program delivery and supervision of educational opportunities such as internships, undergraduate and graduate training; knowledge translation and outreach networking. The supervisor ensures equipment platforms are functional (coordinating instrument maintenance and repair; furnishing basic operating supplies and consumables), and that all users are informed of compliance with PERFORM procedures and University policies, maintaining a safe work environment.
Judgment and Autonomy: The incumbent has a high degree of autonomy and draws upon his or her knowledge to provide support to researchers and their students. They will plan and manage budgets, schedule and prioritize activities, execute purchases, and initiate and manage collaborations and research contracts within the Nutrition Suite.
Working conditions and physical environment: The incumbent will work within a physical activity based setting where minimal to moderate physical exertion is required. This also requires handling of potentially hazardous equipment (as found in kitchens).
Quality and Process: The incumbent ensures appropriate use of all equipment in the Nutrition Suite. They must facilitate compliance (by all users) with PERFORM SOPs, University Health and Safety and external regulatory guidelines in the Nutrition Suite. The incumbent monitors equipment status and maintains relationships with vendors to facilitate maintenance and makes recommendations for any equipment purchases for the Nutrition suite.
B. MAJOR JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
- Manage the operations and ensure the valid use, and operation of equipment in the Nutrition Suite of the PERFORM Centre for research, community and teaching activities, in compliance with external regulatory requirements, University Health and Safety policies, and PERFORM Centre standard operating procedures (SOP).Importance: 1; Frequency: Daily
- Assist in the development, validation and delivery of research protocols by providing professional expertiseand inputs (knowledge of equipment use and protocols) concerning experimental design and execution to multidisciplinary collaborators and users in the Nutrition Suite and provide help with the interpretation of data generated from the Suite. Importance: 1; Frequency: Daily
- Assist in design and implementation teaching activities as well as supervise and evaluate internship students in the Nutrition suite. Importance: 1; Frequency: As Required
- Supervise and train part-time technicians, casual or research staff brought in on project specific basis and supervise and evaluate internship students. Conduct Nutrition Suite user orientation and evaluate trainee performance and preparedness for access to suite equipment/software.Importance: 1; Frequency: As Required
- Ensure safety of all participants, students, users, faculty, and staff while in the Nutrition Suite. Importance: 1; Frequency: Daily
- Forecast, monitor and oversee budget for materials and shared consumables, supplies, repair and maintenance contracts for equipment in the Nutrition Suite.Importance: 1; Frequency: Daily
- Maintain and review SOPs and PERFORM operating documents for research protocol development and facility/equipment use.Importance: 1; Frequency: Daily
- Liaise with, consult with and advise PERFORM administrative and IT staff on equipment needs, HR resource needs and technical developments. Importance: 2; Frequency: As Required
- Oversee the scheduling of all activities by multiple users by planning, implementing and scheduling all research, community and teaching programs in the Nutrition Suite. Importance: 1; Frequency: Daily
- Perform other duties in support of the unit as required. Importance: 2; Frequency: As Required
C. DECISION MAKING
- Decide on scheduling priorities for space and equipment use based on the resources available (which includes staff, maintenance, budget, and time).
- Decide when to intervene to remedy validation or safety issues.
- Decide when to develop new workflows and operational standards to constantly improve Nutrition suite functioning
- Decide when to schedule an equipment service for repair/maintenance.
- Recommend major equipment purchase for the Nutrition Suite and allocation of resources as part of budget management in the area.
D. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
- Bachelor's degree in dietetics with two to four years of experience in program development and evaluation, food services, menu and meal planning.
- Registered dietician with the Ordre professionnel de dietetistes du Quebec (OPDQ).
- Experience in scheduling use of facilities, personnel, and programs.
- Previous experience in supervising students and delivering academic, professional, and/or community programming in nutrition and related fields.
- Intermediate knowledge of Word, Excel and Acrobat Pro.
- Strong knowledge of nutrient analysis software such as "Food Processor" software.
- Familiarity with experimental design, statistical analysis and data storage processes and systems.
- Good communication skills (spoken and written) in both French and English (level 4).
- Strong personal initiative, leadership skills and team work capabilities.
- Strong planning, detail orientation, organizing, decision-making and problem-solving skills.
E. ASSETS
- Experience in designing and delivering research protocols and internship modules.
- Experience in a research or clinical trial environment.
- Experience with Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) guidelines for food management safety.
