In Memoriam: Dr. Gordon Zello
On behalf of the Canadian Nutrition Society (CNS), we extend our sincere condolences to the family, colleagues, and students of Dr. Gordon Zello. The Canadian nutrition community has lost a respected scholar, educator, and leader whose contributions have meaningfully strengthened the field.
Dr. Zello was an engaged member of the nutrition community and a valued contributor to the mission of CNS. Through his scholarship, professional service, and mentorship, he advanced evidence‑based nutrition science and supported the development of future nutrition researchers and practitioners. His work reflected a strong commitment to scientific rigor, collaboration, and the translation of nutrition research to improve health.
Notably, Dr. Zello contributed important research during the COVID‑19 pandemic, examining changes in dietary intake, physical activity, sedentary behaviour, and alcohol consumption among university students. This work provided timely evidence to inform nutrition and health promotion efforts during a period of unprecedented disruption, underscoring the critical role of nutrition science in supporting population health during public health crises.
Dr. Zello was widely respected for his collegiality, integrity, and dedication to education and professional service. His contributions at the local, national, and international levels have left a lasting impact on the nutrition community.
The Canadian Nutrition Society is grateful for his service and contributions to the field. He will be deeply missed.
