This presentation will review two illuminating studies published this year in the area of critical care nutrition - the EFFORT Protein study and the NUTRIREA-3 study. Both of these studies revealed important results that contradict the recommendations of current guidelines. We will review these trials, including post-hoc publications and discuss their influence and impact for ICU clinicians.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

After viewing this webinar, participants will:

a) Learn about two recent seminal trials that studied protein and caloric provision in critically ill patients.

b) Understand the strengths and weaknesses of the studies.

c) Consider how these studies will influence any future guidelines for protein and energy intake in critically ill ICU patients.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS:

Michele’s career has spanned over 30 years of critical care nutrition practice at St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto, serving medical, surgical, trauma and cardiovascular ICU patients. She has taught various clinical nutrition and research courses for 19 years at Toronto Metropolitan University in the School of Nutrition. After many years of instructing dietetic interns, Michele developed the first mentoring program for interns in Canada. She has won several teaching awards including the St. Michael’s Hospital Education Excellence Award after her three years as Dietetic Internship Coordinator. Practice-based research has also always been a passion, and Michele has authored or co-authored many studies and has been a member of multiple national and international nutrition support guideline committees. She now directs McCall Dietetics, offering on-line continuing education courses for dietitians.
