Mini Virtual Conference Overview

Guiding principles for sustainable and healthy diets include eating an abundance and a variety of plant foods and moderate amounts of animal-based foods. Consistent evidence suggests that a plant-based diet rich in fruits, vegetables, nuts, and whole grains, and low in red and processed meats is effective for preventing chronic diseases such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. Studies have also shown that plant foods have a smaller impact on the environment as growing these foods use less water and creates fewer emissions.

This mini-conference will discuss the role of plant-based foods in chronic disease prevention across the lifespan, promoting sustainable healthy eating in the population, and possibilities for innovation. A panel discussion at the end will discuss the balance between plant and animal-based foods, evaluate nutrition recommendations, and discuss the policy implications of plant-based diets.

Learning Objectives:

By the end of this conference, participants will be able to:

  1. To understand the effectiveness of plant foods in attenuating chronic disease risk and/or severity and identify current knowledge gaps.
  2. To understand the challenges of dietary changes to incorporate more plant foods and discuss successful approaches that could be applied in dietetic practice.
  3. To understand the nutritional requirements of individuals on plant-based diets across the lifespan and for special populations, and discuss the implications for implementing plant-based diets.
  4. To discuss the sustainability of plant foods and learn about current innovations in plant food products.
