Workshop Description

Food policies and regulations are tools that Health Canada use to improve food safety, as well as the health of the people of Canada.  An example of a Health Canada policy is the “Policy on Listeria monocytogenes in Ready-to-Eat Foods”, a regulation example is “Nutrition Labelling” including the “Front-of-Package Nutrition Symbol”.  In this workshop, we will focus on the regulatory development process. The development of regulations requires consultations with the public and stakeholders at various stages of the process. Health Canada uses a decision-making process to help frame an issue, identify or assess policy and/or regulatory options, and to gather feedback on new or existing policies.

This two-part workshop will take participants through the various stages of the regulatory development process. This includes understanding what information Health Canada needs to consider for new/revised regulation and the consultation processes that inform its development. To help fully engage participants, case studies will be used.
